Nokia Maps gets better with Public Transport

Written by Sascha Makela.

Nokia-Lumia-800-drive

If having Nokia navigation software was not good enough already, now public transportation is coming too. With it you can see the best way to get to your destination using buses, trams and trains. Currently there is a beta version of Nokia Maps Suite available from Nokia Beta Labs. This suite includes also an augmented reality browser, which turns your phone's camera viewfinder into a new way to spot nearby points of interest. Unfortunately the Nokia Maps Suite is currently only for Symbian devices. Hopefully it will come to the other platforms too. It seems reasonable to expect to see it on Nokia's Windows Phones sooner or later, but I'm not sure about MeeGo. It would be nice to get it there too. Anyway, check the video to see how cool the new public transport feature is.

The Amazing Everyday of Nokia Lumia

Written by Sascha Makela.

Nokia is trying to get consumer exited of their new Lumia product line running on Windows Phone with "The Amazing Everyday" marketing campaign. This massive campaign is trying to drive demand for the product by making these consumers lust for the Lumia devices. "We are paying obsessive attention to the target market, which is 25-year olds" said Steven Overman, Vice President for Marketing Creation at Nokia. "They need to discover things for themselves. They are brand savvy and loyal. And we need to engage them in their hearts and hands."

Microsoft’s vision: mobile cuts are the future paper cuts

Written by Sascha Makela.

Now here is a cool video of our future, if Microsoft would have its way. Those translating glasses could be really handy. If only augmented reality could be added to the lenses. This way we could avoid those nasty mobile cuts due to handling razor thin mobile devices. But the most important fact in this video is that fact that none of us will be fat. How cool is that?! And no, this is not because of some draconian Microsoft imposed "eat only parsley" diets, but we are talking about some highly nutritious diets with plenty of palatable carbohydrates. Although, I do find the lack of any visible meat products in the kitchen, where no one has evidently ever cooked anything, rather worrisome.

Should RIM change to Windows Phone

Written by Sascha Makela.

rim-blackberry-logo-1-300x202Should Research In Motion (RIM) change its BlackBerry line by using Windows Phone in them? Well according to Galen Gruman from InfoWorld they should. In his "How RIM can save BlackBerry: Adopt Windows Phone" article he thinks "RIM should modernize the BlackBerry where it stands out and is beloved: with messaging". He points out that Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is all about modern mobile messaging. "If RIM could port its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) security APIs to Windows Phone 7 and clean up some of the UI misfires in Windows Phone 7 (unreadable message text, for example)," he adds "it would have a compelling messaging device with a much more intuitive UI that would appeal to both its traditional older-adult users and the socially cantered young users."

If that wasn't enough Galen Gruman even suggested that "If RIM can't bring itself to do that, maybe Nokia should buy RIM and do the security and usability modifications to Windows Phone 7 to gain the high security capabilities so beloved by CSOs, then use the BlackBerry brand for these modern messagers". Rather bold statements, I would say, but whether you agree or not with his view, the article surely is an interesting read. Follow the source to read more.

Sports Tracker coming to Windows Phone

Written by Sascha Makela.

Sports-Tracker-Logo-150x150

First we heard that Nokia Drive and Maps are included with Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 and now this. Sports Tracker is coming to Windows Phone too. It's to only reason I keep using my Nokia E7. I just can't live without Sports Tracker! Or, to be more precise, if it wasn't for Sports Tracker giving those nice statistics and keeping track how many calories I burned, I wouldn't bother to exercise at all and that would make my doctor rather upset.

Sports Tracker came originally form Nokia Beta Labs for Nokia's Symbian devices, but currently it's independent company. It has been available for iOS and Android for a while. They also announced recently that it should be available for Nokia N9 in November. Now it seems that it's coming about the same time to Windows Phone too. Great news!

Nokia Drive and Maps on Windows Phone

Written by Sascha Makela.

Nokia-Lumia-800-driveIf you appreciate having a good navigation application in your smartphone, you will be happy to know that Nokia Drive and Nokia Map are included in the new Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 Windows Phone 7.5 Mango smartphones. The Drive and Map app seem very similar to the MeeGo version found in the Nokia N9 and that is a good thing. I've used it quite a lot, mostly on my Nokia N950, and it really does work great. From someone who uses satnavs extensively, I found that Nokia's navigation apps are amongst the best, if not the best.

Good smartphones from Nokia, but the problem is Windows Phone, according to analysts

Written by Sascha Makela.

Nokia-Lumia-800New newly released Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 have received positive feedback from various sources, but no immediate effect is expected in Nokia's smartphone market share. "I am confident they will help stabilise the situation", according to Carolina Milanesi, Research VP in Gartner's Mobile Devices, "more devices are needed for 2012 and a wider availability to significantly improve the market share". She believes that Nokia's Lumia smartphones will be able to compete with Android smartphones, since Android users are usually less loyal to the brand compared to iPhone users.

Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 "are great devices and the technical specifications are good", said Francisco Jeronimo, Research Manager of IDC EMEA, "but the problem is the OS, which has a low market share and it's not that well known". He was, however, surprised of the low €270 price of the Lumia 710. According to him, it will make it the cheapest Windows Phone smartphone with a 1.4 Ghz CPU. "Nokia is entering to these markets very aggressively, but Android and iPhone smartphones are better known. Therefore it will take time to increase the market share."

Interestingly, Francisco Jeronimo predicts that Nokia will benefit when HTC, LG and Samsung will release more smartphones with Windows Phone. He believes that it will increase consumer interest in Windows Phone ecosystem.

White Nokia N9

Written by Sascha Makela.

Nokia-N9-whiteNokia has announced today a new colour for the Nokia N9. The white coloured Nokia N9 will be available during the fourth quarter of 2011, starting with the 64GB version. According to Frank Zillikens, the head of product marketing for Nokia N9, the reason for the late arrival is because "the manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to make sure we deliver the best possible quality for our consumers." Unlike the other colour options, the white Nokia N9 sports a glossy finish.
