Countdown Timer

Countdown Timer, currently available for Nokia N9 and N950 MeeGo Harmattan devices in Nokia Store, is more than a simple egg timer. While it may be used as such, what really makes Countdown Timer different is the ability to create unlimited number of Timer Groups. A Timer Groups is a container for Timers. For each of these groups you may add as many Timers as you want.

 With Countdown Timer you don't need to set the timer for repeating task every time. For example, you could have Timer Group called Pasta. In this group you would then have a timer for each kind of pasta with their cooking times, like Linguine 00:09:00, Penne 00:11:00, Spaghetti 00:06:00 and so on. Now all you have to do for cooking your favourite pasta is to boil the water (and don't forget to add the all-important salt), add the pasta and select the corresponding timer.

Different Timer Modes are also available in Countdown Timer. With Timer Mode you can set the behaviour of when the time is up. As an example, there could be a Timer Group called Bread. The first Timer would be Raise dough. Since this rising process depends on many factors, like the temperature of the ambient, we cannot know exactly how long it takes. Therefore we set the timer to 2 hours and the Timer Mode to Wait. After 2 hours the alarm will go off and message dialog open to tell us what to do next. But the next timer will only start after we press OK, which we would do after we feel the time is right.

To continue this Bread Timer Group example, there could be several Timers for different phases of baking the bread, like different temperatures. Since we would not want to burn the bread, Wait Timer Mode would not be the best. Instead we could use the Immediate Timer Mode. In this mode the next timer will start immediately after the previous one ends. A dialog with the message would open normally and remain there for as long as we dismiss it.

In Countdown Timer the Timer Mode can be set for the entire Timer Group or for each Timer separately. In fact, all of the settings like the alarm sound and volume, vibration and dimming prevention can be set either for the entire Timer Group or for each Timer.

Countdown Timer is currently available in Nokia Store for MeeGo Harmattan (Nokia N9 and N950). I'm planning to make a Symbian version of it. I cannot set the date for it, but hopefully it will available soon for Symbian too. The free version is the same as the full version with some limitations. For example, you may only have up three Timer Groups and each group you may have only up to tree Timers. In the full version the amount of Timer Groups and Timers is unlimited. Also, in the free version you cannot set the hour digits, so the maximum time for a Timer is 00:59:59, while in the full version of Countdown Timer it is 23:59:59.
